Cane Webbing - Pre-woven Cane - Natural and Plastic

  • Use cane webbing for chairs that have a groove around the perimeter of the chair, as shown on rocking chair above at right. (If your chair has holes, go to the Chair Cane or Chair Cane Kits page.)
  • Pre-woven cane webbing comes in several patterns from traditional hexagonal to almost solid woven styles.
  • You'll receive FREE Cane Webbing Installation Instructions with your order.
  • Use common white glue to apply the cane webbing. You can purchase this at any hardware store or home center.
  • Very important:
All cane webbing (except in the 2 cane webbing kits) is priced by the RUNNING FOOT. (ie., A 24" x 24" piece of cane webbing is 2 running feet of 24" width. A 12" x 18" piece is 1 running foot of 18" width.)
There are 3 pages of cane webbing products in the Shopping Cart. Be sure to buy WEDGES and SPLINE for your cane webbing project. Don't plan on re-using the old spline that's currently in the chair. It'll normally be damaged when you finish removing it. (Spline is cheap. If you don't order it with your cane webbing order, you'll be paying shipping costs a 2nd time.)

CANE WEBBING KITS
If you're only re-doing one chair with pre-woven cane webbing in traditional hexagonal pattern, our simple and complete Cane Webbing Kit is your answer. You'll receive either 18x18" piece or 24x24" piece of cane webbing plus one pack of wedges and one coil of spline with complete installation instructions. You still have to measure your chair so you get the right kit parts.

Measuring for cane webbing: Allow about an inch of extra cane webbing on each side of the chair seat measurement so that there's enough webbing to go into the groove without damage.

For larger projects order by the running foot, and purchase the spline and wedges separately.

2. The measurement of the woven area of the chair. Be sure to allow at least 1.5 extra inches on each size.

3. The measurement of the top of the groove so that you order the correct size spline. See below left.

*Remember to order Spline and Caning Wedges for installing your Cane Webbing.
Don't plan on re-using the old spline since it normally gets damaged when you remove it from the chair.

Got Glue?

Any white glue is appropriate for cane webbing. Eg., Elmer's Glue. For outdoor applications (canoe seats) be sure to use a waterproof glue. The plain yellow kind is water resistant- not waterproof.

Do NOT use "Gorilla Gluetm" for cane webbing. It swells far too much.

This beautiful chair was restored with star pattern cane webbing by Sue Casey of weaving4you.com in West Orange, NJ. Sue weaves wonderful baskets, restores seats of all kinds, and teaches classes too.

You can easily turn that flea market find into a work of art!    Roger Hebert restored this wonderful antique rocker with less than $8 worth of cane webbing and spline!

How much should you charge for labor to re-seat a chair with cane webbing?

$3.50 per inch, measuring the longest side. This is approximately $50 for labor only. Add materials costs. (Also, remember that there are regional differences in what the market will bear, but you shouldn't charge less than $50 for this kind of seat replacement project.)
